Virtual You be the Judge
'These three people have been arrested, sent to trial and found guilty.
Now they need to be sentenced ...
With these stories based on real life cases, you can decide for yourself and match your decision with the actual sentences.
You be the judge!'
The Sentencing Advisory Council’s popular You be the Judge program is now available online.
Visitors to Virtual You be the Judge can participate in various aspects of a sentencing hearing, receiving information from victims, offenders, prosecutors, defence lawyers and the judge.
Learn as you move through the experience about all of the factors involved in the sentencing process. Then you will be able to sentence each offender yourself and compare your sentence with that of the actual judge.
Virtual You be the Judge includes three cases. Follow Richard, convicted of culpable driving causing death, Dane, convicted of causing injury, and Terri, convicted of trafficking in a drug of dependence, or why not take on all three cases. Then see if you can match your sentence with that of the actual judge.
Virtual You be the Judge is available at www.sentencingcouncil.vic.gov.au/virtualjudge/.

Victoria's soft sentencing

Good activity, but really shows up how soft we are on the offenders. No wonder there is so much crime on our streets...about time we clamped down and handed out some serious punishments!
Great exercise

Extremely interesting, isn't it good to be able to picture real life instances?! what a wonderful program, so good for students to be able to broaden thier understanding of the law and how it works. Please add some more cases, i am sure students will greatly benefit from as much practice as possible if they are endeavouring into a career of the law! Once again, Thankyou.

Thank You

This 'You Be The Judge' exercise was extremely helpful, thank you for providing it for students studying law. It was helpful to see what in real life situations you have to take into account in order to come to a final verdict as a judge. Very helpful!
