Youth Attendance Order

A Youth Attendance Order is an alternative to the youth justice centre order for offenders aged over 15 years that does not involve detention. Instead it requires the young person to attend a youth supervision unit for up to a year.

The main objectives of a Youth Attendance Order are to provide the young person with activities and requirements which:

  • take into account the gravity of the behaviour
  • penalise the person by imposing restrictions on his or her liberty
  • require the person to make amends for the offence by performing community services
  • provide opportunities to receive guidance and experiences that will assist the young person to develop an ability to abide by the law and complete the requirements of the youth attendance order.

The law relating to a Youth Attendance Order is contained in sections 396-409 of the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005.
