Sentencing Monitoring Resource UPDATE: This resource has been renamed Sentencing Statistics
The Sentencing Advisory Council today launched its Online Sentencing Monitoring resource that examines Victorian trends in sentencing.
The Council's On-line Sentencing Monitoring report draws together data from a range of sources to provide a comprehensive overview of sentencing trends across the courts, prisons and corrections, and to place these in a historical, national and international context where possible.
Council Chair Professor Arie Freiberg said "a key function of the Council is to disseminate statistics and information on sentencing trends".
"Although many of these statistics are currently published, they are not readily accessible, nor are they centrally collected and made available from a single source" said Professor Freiberg.
"The on-line resource is a first for Victoria. It presents the information in visually accessible graphs with a plain English explanation, and allows those with a specific interest in a particular area to download the source data underlying the report" he said.
"The resource is designed to be accessible to a broad audience, including the judiciary, government, researchers and members of the general public with an interest in sentencing issues".
The monitoring statistics, which will be updated regularly, are web-based and are available free via the Council's web site.
"All those with an interest in sentencing outcomes in Victoria and the impact of sentencing practices on prisons, juvenile detention centres and community corrections should log onto the Councils' website and utilise the free on-line resource" said Professor Freiberg.
