Community Corrections Data Updated
Community corrections data in the Sentencing Statistics section of our website have just been updated.
Victoria has various types of community corrections orders with different purposes and requirements. Data are presented for the following order types: three categories of community-based order – CBO with supervision, CBO with community work only and CBO for fine default – intensive correction orders, community work permits, combined custody and treatment orders, drug treatment orders and home detention orders.
Some interesting facts contained in the new data include:
- In 2007, 18,009 community corrections orders were commenced.
- The three most common order types commenced were CBOs for fine default (48%), CBOs with supervision (25%), and intensive correction orders (11%).
- Less than 1% of orders commenced were home detention orders (84), combined custody and treatment orders (38), and drug treatment orders (37).
- From 2006 to 2007, the number of CBOs commenced for fine default increased by 82% to 8,617.
- Compared with other Australian states and territories, Victoria had the lowest community corrections rate in 2007, with 193.5 people serving a community corrections order per 100,000 adults. This was well below the national average of 328.7 per 100,000 adults.
