You be the Judge Case Studies Updated
“The PowerPoint’s are fabulous for class use and the cases and information was very easy for students to follow and understand. One of the best resources developed – your writers were spot on for Legal Units 1-4.” (Legal Studies Unit 3/4 teacher)
Since its release in April 2007, the You be the Judge curriculum material has received rave reviews from Legal Studies and Civics & Citizenship teachers.
The aim of the You be the Judge program is to educate students about the purposes, methods and complexities of sentencing. The program uses real sentencing case studies which provide a vehicle for students to discuss and consider offences committed, apply the principles of sentencing and experience for themselves what’s involved in handing down a sentence.
The kit includes a Teacher Guide which contains all of the background material a teacher will need to run the program, and a slide presentation and teacher notes for each of the case studies, which include a range of student activities that can be used in the classroom or given as extension tasks.
The case studies concentrate on the sentencing phase of the legal process and are drawn from real cases in Victoria. The three current cases involve offences of culpable driving, armed robbery and causing serious injury.
The data in the slide presentations and accompanying notes has been fully updated, with all statistics now covering the period up to the end of 2006/2007. You can download the updated PDF files from the website now, or contact us if you would like a version sent to you on CD. Also, a small number of the hard-copy kits – including the Teacher Guide and all three case studies – are still available. Teachers can contact us to have a free copy sent directly to their school.
