"You be the judge"
As part of its role in educating and informing the public about sentencing issues, the Council has developed a public sentencing seminar known as 'You Be the Judge'. This seminar involves the provision of information on the various sentencing orders available in Victoria, followed by audience participation in sentencing an offender in a case study. The aim of the exercise is to improve participants' understanding of sentencing principles and to highlight many of the complexities inherent in the sentencing process.
Booklet on the role of judges in sentencing
The Council has partnered with the Judicial Conference of Australia, the Victoria Law Foundation, the NSW Judicial Commission and the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research in a project to produce a plain English booklet explaining the role of judges in sentencing. The booklet was released in December 2006.
