Help with Specific Types of Content

The Sentencing Advisory Council attempts to provide content which is compatible with as many browsers and computer types as possible. As well as the regular pages and graphics, you will find that the Sentencing Advisory Council pages sometimes contain the following types of content:

  • JavaScript
  • Java
  • PDF
  • MS Excel

Below is an explanation of each of these additional features which provide some extra functionality.

JavaScript is used by the Sentencing Advisory Council. This application gives the web browser some extra capabilities. Common uses for JavaScript are "mouseovers", which are used to make images change when your mouse moves over them, and pop-up windows, which are used to make a smaller window appear on your screen in front of your main browsing window.

Compatibility Issues

Some browsers, and some older versions of browsers, can't use JavaScript, or may not understand newer versions of JavaScript. Java is used to create small programs called "applets" which run inside your browser. Not all browsers can use Java, and some Macintosh computers require Java to be installed on the computer and not in the browser.

Attachment formats - PDF and Excel

PDF is a format based on Adobe's PostScript printing language which is used to display and print precisely-formatted documents via the web. Most documents available for downloading on the Sentencing Advisory Council site are in PDF format. To view or print these documents, you will need to install the Adobe Acrobat® Reader. If you have the Adobe Acrobat® Reader you can PRINT to your local printer. To VIEW the document via the internet, place your mouse cursor over the Adobe® icon and click the left mouse button. To SAVE the document to your computer, place your mouse cursor over the Adobe® icon and click the right mouse button.

Compatibility Issues: The Adobe Acrobat® Reader is required to read PDF documents. If you don't have it, you can download it from the Adobe website.

The Sentencing Statistics section of the site has data in Excel format. To view or print these files you will need Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Excel Viewer. If you have the Microsoft Excel you can PRINT to your local printer. To VIEW the document via the internet, place your mouse cursor over the Excel icon and click the left mouse button. To SAVE the document to your computer, place your mouse cursor over the Excel icon and click the right mouse button.

Compatibility Issues: Microsoft Excel  is required to read Excel documents. If you don't have it, you can download it from the Microsoft website.
