From June 2020, the Council is offering free, online ‘You be the Judge’ educational sessions via Zoom for members of the public.
You will hear from the offender and a victim, and you will learn the basics of sentencing law. You will then sentence the offender before finding out the sentence that the judge imposed in the real-life case. Each 90-minute session involves questions, discussion and tough decision-making.
Although the sessions deal with serious offences, the content is not explicit. The subject matter and level of legal detail make it ideal for adults, as well as for students from Year 9 and above.
Please use the form below to register your interest in one of the scheduled sessions.
Note: Because details of the crime are provided in the first few minutes of each session, participants must be logged in to the session at the starting time. Instructions for how to join the session will be provided.
The Sentencing Advisory Council also offers You be the Judge sessions for adult community groups. Please see our Bookings for Community Education Sessions page to request a You be the Judge session for your group or workplace.
Note: We do not provide You be the Judge sessions for secondary school classes. Materials for secondary school teachers to deliver their own ‘You be the Judge’ sessions are available on our Resources for Teachers page.
If for any reason you can no longer attend a session, please let us know.
