Courts, Media, and Public Opinion: Forum 2016
The Council held its major community education event for 2016 at Monash Chambers, Melbourne, on Monday 16 May. Entitled 'Courts, Media, and Public Opinion: Who’s Leading Who?', the forum formed part of Law Week 2016.
Approximately 220 people attended the forum and heard a panel of experts discuss the dynamics at play between Victoria’s courts, the media, and the community – and whether things could be improved. The panellists were:
- Professor Arie Freiberg AM – Chair of the Sentencing Advisory Council
- The Honourable Justice Christopher Beale – Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria
- Mr Jon Faine – radio presenter and journalist at 774 ABC Radio Melbourne
- Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner AM – Governor of Tasmania, lead researcher on the Victorian Jury Sentencing Study.
The forum concluded with audience questions and discussion.
The Council has released a recording of the forum and the slides used by the Honourable Justice Beale and Her Excellency the Honourable Professor Kate Warner. The recording and slides are available for download via Dropbox (external link opens in a new window).
Please note that technical problems with the hand-held microphones mean that some audience questions and comments at the end of the forum are inaudible in the recording.
