The Sentencing Advisory Council has tabled its annual report for 2019–20.
During a challenging financial year, the Council published significant findings about sentencing practices for young adult offenders and completed its landmark study of children involved in both the child protection and the criminal justice systems in Victoria.
In addition, the Council tackled the complex issues of time served prison sentences and deportation and sentencing, and it continued to provide up-to-date statistical information on sentencing to the community.
The Council was quick to move its educational program online in March 2020 after successful sessions in regional Victoria in late 2019. It ended the financial year having conducted over 20 community education and training sessions.
Two new directors joined the Sentencing Advisory Council in 2019–20, bringing fresh perspectives on victim-survivors and on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters.
