Today we released an update of our SACStat sentencing database with new Magistrates’ Court data.
The new data covers over 450 offences sentenced in the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria in the three years to 30 June 2023.
SACStat includes all offences that had 40 or more charges sentenced in the Magistrates’ Court over the three-year period.
The most prevalent Magistrates’ court offences in the three years to June 2023 were:
- commit an indictable offence while on bail (40,259 charges in 21,867 cases)
- unlawful assault (17,225 charges in 12,907 cases)
- drive a motor vehicle while authorisation is cancelled or suspended (25,731 charges in 22,350 cases).
SACStat also includes data on over 250 offences sentenced in the County and Supreme Courts (the higher courts) of Victoria for the five years to 30 June 2022.
