Animal Cruelty Offences

The Council has commenced the first comprehensive review of sentencing for animal cruelty offences in Victoria.

The project team will examine court data for the 10 years to 31 December 2017 to address a series of research questions:

  • How many animal cruelty offences were sentenced in Victoria?
  • What were the sentencing outcomes for these offences?
  • What sort of demographic profile did people who commit these offences have?
  • Were people sentenced for other charges in the same case as animal cruelty offences?
  • Did people reoffend after committing animal cruelty offences? If so, how often did they reoffend and what sort of offences did they commit?

The project team will also be consulting with key stakeholders, including animal protection organisations and government agencies.
