Firearms Offences

The Council has completed a comprehensive review of sentencing practices for firearms offences in Victoria. The review examined data from the Magistrates’ Court, the higher courts (the County Court and the Supreme Court) and the Children’s Court.

The project team analysed sentencing data for the five years to 30 June 2017 in order to research:

  • the characteristics of offenders sentenced for firearms offences
  • the number and type of firearms offences committed
  • co-sentenced offending
  • sentencing outcomes.

The project team also analysed sentencing remarks to determine factors that may influence sentencing outcomes for charges of firearms offences sentenced in the higher courts.

The project team consulted with key stakeholders, organisations and government agencies.

Firearms Offences: Current Sentencing Practices was released in May 2019.
