Firearms Offences

The Council has commenced a comprehensive review of sentencing practices for firearms offences in Victoria. The review will examine data from both the Magistrates’ Court and the higher courts (the County Court and the Supreme Court).

The project team will examine sentencing data for the five years to 30 June 2017 in order to research:

  • the characteristics of offenders sentenced for firearms offences
  • the number and type of firearms offences committed
  • co-sentenced offending
  • sentencing outcomes.

The project team will also analyse sentencing remarks to determine factors that may influence sentencing outcomes for charges of firearms offences sentenced in the higher courts.

The project team will consult with key stakeholders, organisations and government agencies.
