Theft Offences Sentenced in the Magistrates’ Court

In September 2017, the Council began examining sentencing outcomes for theft offences in the Magistrates’ Court for the five-year period between July 2012 and June 2017. These offences comprise theft of a motor vehicle, theft from a motor vehicle, theft from a shop, theft of a bicycle and other (or unspecified) theft.

The project updates the Council’s popular statistical profile Sentencing Outcomes for Theft in the Magistrates’ Court published in 2008.

The new report examined:

  • the number of theft offences sentenced in the Magistrates’ Court
  • sentencing outcomes for theft offences, including trends over time
  • the age and gender of theft offenders.

Theft: Sentencing Outcomes in the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria was released in December 2017.
