Theft Offences Sentenced in the Magistrates’ Court

In September 2017, the Council began examining sentencing outcomes for theft offences in the Magistrates’ Court for the five-year period between July 2012 and June 2017. These offences comprise theft of a motor vehicle, theft from a motor vehicle, theft from a shop, theft of a bicycle and other (or unspecified) theft.

The project will update the Council’s popular statistical profile Sentencing Outcomes for Theft in the Magistrates’ Court published in 2008. The new statistical profile will examine:

  • the number of theft offences sentenced in the Magistrates’ Court
  • sentencing outcomes for theft offences, including trends over time
  • the age and gender of theft offenders.
