The Council has published its findings on sentencing approaches to young adult offenders (aged between 18 and 25), releasing Rethinking Sentencing for Young Adult Offenders in December 2019. In this report, the Council::
- examines the evidence on young adults’ development and maturity
- summarises the sentencing framework for young adults in Victoria
- provides a statistical profile of cases involving young adult offenders in the five years to 30 June 2018, including the use of the ‘dual track’ system
- provides an overview of possible alternative approaches, looking at those taken in other jurisdictions.
The project team consulted with key stakeholders, organisations and government agencies in the preparation of this report.
