The number of cases sentenced in the higher courts of Victoria (the County and Supreme Courts) has decreased.
In 2020–21, 1,384 cases were sentenced in the higher courts, down from 2,058 cases in 2004–05.
The number of cases fell by 21.9% between 2019–20 and 2020–21, from 1,773 cases to 1,384 cases. This decrease was due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused delays in higher courts proceedings throughout 2020–21.
These numbers do not include cases that were finalised by:
- an appeal
- an acquittal
- transfer to another court
- withdrawal of all charges.
