Under the Youth Justice Act 2024 (Vic), the Children’s Court can impose a community service order on a child aged over 15. A community service order can only be made with the child’s consent.
A community service order can be made with or without conviction.
A community service order can operate for up to 6 months. During the order, the child must complete unpaid community service activities, such as volunteering at a local community centre. The activities are for:
- up to 25 hours if the child is sentenced for one offence and
- up to 50 hours if the child is sentenced for more than one offence.
Community service orders cannot extend beyond a person’s 21st birthday.
