Teachers' Kit
The Teachers’ Kit is a suite of materials that teachers can use to deliver engaging You be the Judge sessions in their classroom. The kit is designed especially for Years 11 and 12 legal studies teachers and includes materials that align with the curriculum for VCE Legal Studies.
During a You be the Judge session, students identify, consider, discuss and apply the principles of sentencing. Students then choose what sentence they would impose and compare it to the sentence that the real-life judge imposed in the case.
The Teachers’ Kit currently includes three case studies:
- Aggravated burglary
- Dangerous driving causing death
- Theft.
Each case study has PowerPoint slides with notes and suggested activities.
The Teachers’ Kit also includes a guide to running the You be the Judge sessions. The guide incorporates information on applicable sentencing schemes and sentencing statistics about each offence.
The Teachers’ Kit can be read alongside A Quick Guide to Sentencing, which provides teachers and students with an overview of Victorian sentencing law.
