The Sentencing Advisory Council warmly welcomes the appointment of Justice Karin Emerton as its new Chair.
The Council is also pleased to announce that Director Stan Winford has been selected by the Board of Directors to serve as Deputy Chair.
New Chair
Justice Emerton brings extensive experience of Victoria’s justice system and courts. She served as President of the Court of Appeal from 2022 to 2026, following four years as a judge of the Court of Appeal and almost nine years as a judge of the Supreme Court’s Trial Division. Before her judicial appointment, Justice Emerton was Crown Counsel and a barrister. She has also previously served as a member of the Victorian Law Reform Commission.
New Deputy Chair
Stan Winford has served on the Council’s Board for more than two years. He is Director of RMIT’s Centre for Innovative Justice and has extensive experience across legal practice, research and justice policy. He has worked as a prosecutor and defence lawyer in the private, government and community legal sectors, and has supported the work of parliamentary inquiries and Royal Commissions on justice issues.
The Council’s CEO, Dr Paul McGorrery, welcomed Justice Emerton and Mr Winford to their new roles:

Stan has also been integral to the work of the Council over the past few years, and I’m delighted to welcome him to this new role.
