The number of cases sentenced in the higher courts of Victoria (the County and Supreme Courts) has generally decreased over time.
In 2021-22, 1,670 cases were sentenced in the higher courts, down from 2,058 cases in 2004-05.
The number of cases rose by 20.7% between 2020-21 and 2021-22, from 1,384 cases to 1,670 cases. This increase was due to the easing of delays in higher courts proceedings that had been caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020–21.
These numbers do not include cases that were finalised by:
- an appeal
- an acquittal
- transfer to another court
- withdrawal of all charges.
