The Sentencing Advisory Council has today published its latest factsheet examining the number of people who commit serious violent or sexual offences while serving a community correction order (CCO). This new factsheet covers people sentenced for ‘serious offences’ (as defined in section 104AA of the Corrections Act 1986 (Vic)) during the 2023-24 financial year.

The factsheet reveals that:

  • 503 people were sentenced in 2023-24 for serious offences committed while serving a CCO
  • the most common serious offences committed by people serving a CCO and sentenced in 2023-24 were making a threat to kill (250 charges), aggravated burglary (150 charges) and making a threat to inflict serious injury (111 charges)
  • an estimated 1.7% of people serving a CCO committed a serious offence while subject to that order.

These findings are consistent with the Council’s previous seven reports and factsheets about serious offences committed by people serving a CCO. Each year since 2016-17, between 1.6% and 1.7% of people serving a CCO commit a serious offence while subject to that order. The most common serious offences committed each year by people serving a CCO are making a threat to kill, making a threat to inflict serious injury, and aggravated burglary.
