We have released a new set of Sentencing Snapshots for nine offences sentenced in the County and Supreme Courts of Victoria.
The nine offences are:
- armed robbery
- aggravated burglary
- arson
- intentionally causing serious injury
- recklessly causing serious injury
- intentionally causing injury
- trafficking in a commercial quantity of drugs
- trafficking in a large commercial quantity of drugs
- cultivating a commercial quantity of narcotic plants.
The latest Sentencing Snapshots cover sentences imposed in the five years to 30 June 2023. They present data on the types and lengths of sentences imposed when each of these offences was the principal offence (the most serious offence) in a case.
The Sentencing Snapshots include citations for cases with the longest imprisonment sentences as well as the least severe sentences imposed. These case citations are designed to highlight the least and most serious versions of these offences in the five-year period.
COVID-19 affected court operations during this period, particularly in 2020-21 and 2021-22, and it was expected to reduce the number of cases sentenced each year as well as the types of sentences being imposed.
Changes to the Publication of Snapshots
We recently revised the list of offences covered by Sentencing Snapshots and will no longer be publishing Snapshots for the following offences:
- obtaining financial advantage by deception
- obtaining property by deception
- theft
- trafficking in a non-commercial quantity of drugs
- cultivating a non-commercial quantity of narcotic plants
- indecent act with a child under 16 and related offences
- recklessly causing injury.
As a result, we will now publish Sentencing Snapshots for 18 offences (nine Sentencing Snapshots per year).
The new Sentencing Snapshots are available for download from our website. Sentencing statistics for all past and present Sentencing Snapshots offences will continue to be available on SACStat.
